I would say that more than half of the world's population are visual learners and speakers, I definitely fall in this category as I assume all creative's do. So when I get asked [often] by people "What do you do for work?" my brain instantly goes into hyperventilation mode, alarms sound off, panic creeps in and I scramble for the words to describe what I do.... it's not that i'm embarrassed about what I do [I LOVE what I do] it's that i'm embarrassed that I don't know how to eloquently explain w/out being long winded what I do and...I kinda do a lot of different things I guess..... I long for the day when I have finally overcome that darn syntax of mine! :/
Well, luckily I am friends with two very talented people who make some of the prettiest and classiest films you will ever see. Their attention to detail blows my mind. I asked husband and wife duo Matt and Julie Walker of Tiger in a Jar if they would be interested in making a film of me doing what I do. Is it too weird to say that their film of me gives me goosebumps? So now if anyone wonders what I do, I have a visual explanation to show them. :] Thank You Matt and Julie!

Delightful! I want you to design my clothes and the books I read to my grandkids!
First off, I was watching your video when I saw you join on Instagram. Serendipity & hooray!!
Ok, now onto the video. What a beautiful film! I loved seeing you in action as you were painting. I love the rolly balls under your darling slipper-feet. Everything.
I also loved hearing more about drawing your characters. It reminded me so much of the creative process of a poet from a TED talk... but basically when the poet was a young girl, out working in the field, she would feel a poem coming towards her. Like it was coming at her across the landscape and when she felt it coming she had to run as fast as she could toward the house to get a pen & paper before it caught up to her or it would pass through her looking for another poet. :) Isn't that amazing? I loved hearing about that. I will try to find that TED talk for you. I bet you would love it.
wait you joined instagram?
okay roxy, this was amazing! you are too cute and such an amazing artist. i love peeking into other illustrators worlds and yours is very inspiring!
those sketchbooks look amazing. i hope i can visit one day and look through them!

Hi Roxy, love the video and secretively it is so nice to just peek into the lives of creative people. Is it okay to share the video on my blog?
Christien, ZIZOlabel
Hi Roxy! I actually follow Tiger In A Jar on Vimeo and just saw this beautiful video. I love what you do... just wanted to give you a virtual high-five!
Thank you all for continuing to shower me with such sweet compliments. It's very overwhelming actually...I guess my world is growing huh? But everything you all write touches me deeply. Personal comments below:
Holly C M! I would LOVE to design some clothes for you as well as hundreds and millions of children's books! I will make it happen lady! :)
Jill, I did join instagram...FINALLY! can you believe it? :-[) It's definitely foreign...and then for some reason I feel weird about comment on other people's photos...will take some time. :) Thanks for sending me that TED link, super inspiring!
Denise, YES I DID join instagramaramadingdong! lol :-[) I will find you on there!
I would love to see a video like mine of you! Your are just as much of an inspiring artist too! AND any time you are in Utah visiting, you can stay at our home, we have 2 cozy guest bedrooms and you can look through all the sketchbooks you like. :) The slippers: my good friend Jenny gave those to me a couple years back but you can find some similar here: http://www.etsy.com/listing/120874472/item-no136-turkish-anatolian-hand-knit?
Evie, thank you... :) but aren't you living your dream too lady?:[) Your work is just as wonderful!
Hello Christien, you're so funny...you don't need to be secretive about wanting to look into the lives of creative people. I'm a self proclaimed peeping tom when it comes to how people decorate and organize...one day you may find me peeping in your living room window! :) j/k and yes, you may definitely share this video! ANYONE is free to share it! Thank you so much!
Nicole, Thank you so much, virtual high-five back! love that...need to do more of them! :-[)
You are utterly talented and incredibly inspiring. I just wanted to tell you that you've inspired me. I'd love to get your bear blanket for my little girl who will be here in 10weeks.
Thanks Roxy, I'll post your video then ;), Christien
I love seeing people in motion and hearing their voices. It's a literal fleshing out of a character I created in my head, often surprising me in many ways (especially people's voices). It reminds me that you live in the same 4 dimensions I do, just few thousand miles away.
I loved the video. What a beautiful artistic vision you hold. You are a an inspiring and interesting person, Roxy. Your work and words really get my mind going!
Sisilia,
Thank you for your sweet comment. :) And congrats on being pregnant and getting a new best friend soon! So exciting!!!
Christien, no problem! :)
Abby, thanks for this comment. This inspires me to do and be better! :-[) It is funny to finally hear a persons voice after reading their thoughts or seeing pictures... I totally know what you mean! :)
such a wonderful video! you are such a good illustrator! I have a question, were you interested in fashion design before going to parsons? my husband wants to go into that (sort of. designing clothes for snow/skate companies? that is still fashion I'd say). and he doesn't know whether to go to school (fidm is where he wants to go) or if he can just get hired on somehow to a company through an internship? did you like going to the school? did you feel like you learned things you couldn't have learned otherwise, like through experience from internships? sorry if that is lame to be asking questions like this on your post.
So beautiful! You, (YOUR HAIR! gasp) the video, your effortless talent . Just amazing. Love your blog.
Amanda, thanks so much for your comment/compliment. :) <3 I was interested in fashion since about age 10...and then I get to Parsons 14 years later and then realize..whoa whoa whoa...I want to illustrate...:] If I could go back and do it all over again, I would have done it completely different. Just because of the insane student loans I have now. I would encourage your husband to take some sketching/illustrating classes at a community college, start physically making stuff right now and try and get an internship somewhere...do this for a year or two and then go from there...most likely he won't really need to go to school. I would love to go into more depth about my reasons why, so if you email me: roxymarjdesign@gmail.com I will get back to you about this. :)xo
Ardelle, thank you so much. :) I am laughing though at you gasping over my hair...I think the video made it look a lot better than what it really is in real life! :) xo but thank you so much. :)
loved the video roxy!!! but then again I love everything about you and all that you do. good thing i know you in real life or I'd be one of those creepy internet stalker people. you are amazing! xo
Thanks Mandi! you crack me up as usual! :-[) And...you're only creepy if you don't tell the person [in my case for example]that you read their blog...have had many experiences like this with people where something they said to me pretty much eluded to the fact they read my blog...and then I think to myself,"why won't you tell me you read/have read my blog?" <- but then again...I know the answer. :/
