Jesse and I both hope to have a "room" of our own someday...

We love to tell one another what our spaces would look and feel like... my work space would double as a shop that anyone could come visit and browse or buy little handmade items that I make.

Before I saw Roald Dahl's hut I imagined my little place to look something soo similar to the likes of his... something a little run down but cozy. I wouldn't say his is entirely cozy but still....

I searched hut and shed on amazon.uk. and came across this fun book:

It reminds me of my childhood growing up. The seven of us [kids] were ALWAYS making things... my brothers were always fascinating me with the many forts and fake guns that they would make and actually use. I give major props to my mom for being such a creative mom and helping all of us develop those skills. It makes me cringe when I see parents keeping their kids from experiencing a similar childhood. With all the ipads, iphones, video games etc. that are out there...kids are just becoming less and less creative. Plus it weirds me out with all the "creative" apps on these things...really? Why not go create something in real life? I definitely am standing on my soapbox right now preaching...this is something I feel soo passionate about [obviously] to the point that I will do everything in my power to keep my kids off of electronics IN OUR HOME... maybe our kids will be slower than the rest of the kids in their grade...lol and they may even be really introverted because us depriving them of their digital motor skills, and they may never even get into college, or high school for that matter...who would even want to play with such a child that makes things with his or her own hands and uses their imagination....weird I know. But we're ready to take that leap into the creative unknown! lol Okay, I'll stop now. :/

For Christmas I received a little bit of money, and decided to use the entire amount on building my children's book collection. One of the books I received that I am so in love with is:

Lastly, my sweet friend Emily had some ladies over last night for dinner and then to decorate canvases. It was her Christmas present to all of us. She provided the canvases as well as magazines and books for everyone to tear up and mod podge till our hearts delight. It was so much fun, and such a creative way to bring ladies together. * she got the books at the thrift store. So smart she is!

Starting my day off with something inspiring is a real favorite. It gives you something to think about other than yourself and hopefully encourage you to be better friend, artist, listener, communicator etc. This video of artist Riusuke Fukahori makes me want to be more patient and thoughtful in everything I do and slow down my life even more. I like to imagine what it would be like to spend a day with some of my favorite artists...and I feel like with Fukahori [whom I just heard about today] it would be so tranquil and steady..... I love this one of Jevgenia the mask maker, but I have to disagree with her comment about animals expressions versus people's expressions. She says "animals are just animals, you make a bear or a fox but they don't have any emotions, but faces of people are interesting to make. You can make a mask smile or you can make an evil or kindhearted mask." I think a mask of anything would be interesting....but what's funny is at the end of this video, her animal masks have sooo much character as opposed to her human masks. Her animals are far more interesting which makes it so odd that she would make such a comment.... what do you think?

The History of Glitter! I love this one because I am such a lover of all things sparkly and shimmery. I warn Jesse that when we have kids, he will need to be the sparkle police. Because when the babies come, and grow big and strong...it's all about the sparkle folks! We'll glitter the bedposts, curtains, buckles and collars. We'll sparkle and shimmer the fun out of the house...it will be a war-zone of shine!

Do you make a list every year, whether it is physical or mental? I know I am not alone in this. {that comment was meant to make you laugh by the way} I have overheard and within-heard of people and friends talking about they lists they want to make this year or the opposite and not wanting to make a list at all because they just fail in the end. : / I would be lying if I said it didn't make me sad when I heard the latter. Lists are good [in my opinion] and fun to keep. I have kept many of my "to-do/change/want/need" lists from years past, and they really crack me up.... Plus, they are hard copies of what I held as priorities. So they become a blueprint as to what my mind was focusing on at the time. Some of the things I am not totally proud of [not like, bad horrible things that would send me to jail but just those tangible wants] but others I find really precious. I hope to make more precious lists as the years go by and as I grow older and learn more and more about what is most important in life. My list above is simple [on purpose] and there is a formula within that I will share with you. It goes like this: If I {roxy} wants lots of things all the time, then two things come to mind. 1. Am filling some kind of inner void by wanting this? Is it a personal gratification thing or an outsider gratification. Meaning, do I want it just so others can see it and compliment it? and 2. When wanting things all the time, this means I have to set aside time to either search for it online or go to a store. Let's be honest here, most shopping is never in and out in a jiffy...you see other things, NEW things that you want, and then you get sidetracked....yep, still talking about me, but you in general. So this wanting and shopping takes time. It takes time away from me creating and making. It takes time away from Jesse, friends, and family. This is my formula for keeping me from wanting less and shopping less...no matter the income. We all have people we look up to...some of my "hero's" are those that live very minimal lifestyles but at the same time maintain the cozy within. One of my favorite sources of "cozy/minimal" inspiration comes from Nordic Flavor. I live vicariously through these home owner's spaces. Here are some of my favorite images that exudes the kind of feeling and lifestyle that both Jesse and I really love and strive for within our home. I can't wait till we move into a house someday just so I can see what our place will really look like with our items spread out and actually put away. Due to our lack of closet space, many of our "put away" items line our apt. walls, for instance our shop vac and my four poster twin bed frame are just hanging out in our bedroom...it could make some people's skin crawl....but it's actually pretty funny. :)

Thank you to those who read my blog whether you are anonymous or not. I do feel a little shy and awkward about saying thank you...because it feels almost self-centered. But I have made some really special friends through blogging since 2005...and look forward to making some more. xo

Jesse and I get to carpool to work everyday. I love it. I love it because he is my husband, and so funny...but I really love it because I don't have to drive! I am not a big fan of driving, it's exhausting and makes me so terribly sleepy. Annnyways, on our way to work today, Jesse said that he can't wait for summer to come. I am excited as well, but I love fall and winter the mostest. However, after seeing this video from Tiger in a Jar, made exclusively for Kinfolk....I am now getting a slight summer itch....and an itch to make our own honey!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas... and got some relaxing in. I read a lot of books [children's books. please, I am not a fast reader] over the weekend at my mom & stepdad's, and came across a new favorite : "Leif The Lucky" from one of my very favorite children's book illustrators Ingri & Edgar Parin d'Aulaire.

The illustrations are so imaginative and you will stay on each page forever studying all the detail. The Parin d'Aulaire's are a huge inspiration of mine when drawing my own little children's books...especially because each illustration was a lithograph.

Other than reading over the weekend, and spending time with family...we had a very nice holiday.

Here is our Christmas card that we sent out... Jesse did some painting on top of it in photoshop.

It first started out with me asking Jesse to take some photos of me with my faux crows...and then afterwards when he was playing around my photos...I thought that we should make a card out of it...and include him. I love his expression. This card is a pretty good description of our relationship. :-[) hehehe lol

I love the holidays - specifically Christmas. Not because of the gifts I receive but the gifts I get to give. I am actually a walking contradiction though when it comes to gifts, because as much as I love giving them...it is the getting that I have a hard time with. Receiving gifts brings out anxiety in me...and I have all these thoughts going through my head, such as: Will I get a "How to Paint Like Bob Ross" book again [that gift from my mother was not as a joke... :/] or something on the same lines, how do I react to such a gift that makes my response believable? What if they made this gift, and it's not my style but yet...do I have to keep it in my home? :/ All these stresses come out...but about a month ago I decided this: SO WHAT! So what if it isn't something that I wouldn't buy myself, or that you may not want to decorate with or bake with. Overall, I realized that the art of receiving a gift is to gracefully say "Thank you so much" AND love that person for having even having you in mind...well ME for my situations. If you want to go further with adding..."I love it so much or how did you know?" That is totally fine. but really, a simple and genuine THANK YOU SO MUCH is all one needs to do...

So, with that said. Two weeks ago we had our little art dept. Christmas Party. We went to the Spaghetti Factory in Trolley Square for lunch [I LOVE the decor in that place, especially the ceiling and light fixtures] and we all exchanged gifts. Our theme was to give everyone something that you love that was within a 5$ budget. Here is what I received from my coworkers. I loved every gift. :) My coworker Sarah was the one who made the animals w/ plants. See her blog HERE.

some hand painted mugs and a new zine of mine with some of my new characters.

Sarah was also super sweet in giving me another gift just the other day. A scarf she found for me at the thrift store. This girl has record scores of finding such pretty things. I love the scarf, but my true favorite was how everything was put together. The visible thought that was there that said to me: I love using my hands, and find pleasure in the tiny delicates. :-[) The tiny delicates are some of the cutest things in the world!

And then yesterday I received a Merry Christmas package from my dear friend Vivi!

She seriously is a master at the tiny delicates and has this special Swiss finger touch that is consistent with everything she makes. I love all things Vivi! :)

With all those gifts mentioned...I don't want it to seem like a brag fest of : "Oh look what IIII got" type of deal. No, it's not that at all. I was actually meaning to have this post up last week but was so busy with work. I wanted to do this post because of all the consistent Christmas Present posts we have all seen in the blogosphere of what to get your loved ones. With me and Jesse's budget being very limited, 90% of the items people are talking about are just not affordable right now for family and friends. That's why homemade gifts are always nice...or thrifted ones! All the gifts above are affordable and very low maintenance to make. i.e. Vivi's favorite recipes that she wrote down for me! I LOVE this...or even buying a nice sheet of paper and writing one's favorite poem or song on there and then getting a 50 cent frame at the thrift store to go in it... these gifts are sure to make your loved ones smile and melt. :)

Lastly, another new character "Billar" has entered our little home. I can't wait for the day when we finally move into a house because it is getting cramped with me, Jesse, and all 200+ Roxy Marj characters...Plus they are always sooooo hungry! Jesse and I are probably going to have to get second jobs here soon to maintain feeding them... if you have any inexspensive, yet healthy ideas on how to feed my little friends...PLEASE DO SHARE! :-[)

Billar : Oh my gosh, this little guy is too sweet for words... he is extremely observant, and finds happiness in the tiniest of things... I love him so much. :)

whoopsies : Okay a double lastly.

As mentioned a month ago, I was supposed to have a little pop-up shop last weekend. It did not happen. So, to those of you who had mentioned you wanted to come [thank you by the way] rest assured...nothing went down, and that it got bumped to February, right before Valentines day. This happened because of my work load, holiday parties, my intern Tilly dealing with finals etc. It was too crazy and not worth us pulling all nighters for and getting stressed.... I apologize in the lateness of this message.

Hope you all had a fun weekend...I am still hoping for snow. : / I had this thought the other day while wishing for snow: what would our world be like if people had control over the weather? I want to see a movie with this being the main theme...sounds interesting, no? ha! or perhaps you're thinking "that is the lamest thing I have ever heard" lol okay okay...you just calm down now...

But really, this weekend was fun and chill and inspiring... a couple highlights:

Jesse landed a really cool job with an outdoor wholesale company working with their marketing team. I am so excited about this because he works just 3 blocks from me...this is extra special considering that my work is out in the industrial area of Salt Lake...and even more super special because we only have 1 car...we really got blessed! Booya for blessings! :-[) Annnnyways, so because getting a job [especially a happy one] is such a big deal, I thought it only appropriate to find something for Jesse for congratulating him. In my search for something memorable, I came across the artist Jon Knox and instantly fell in love with this drawing of what looks like in my mind, a cartoon version of Jesse! :-[) lol He loved it and was happily surprised. I found the frame at one of my favorite home goods shops here in Salt Lake: Emilie Jayne.

Due to our kitchen being tiny and our counter space being about as big as a cutting board, I rarely bake these days. It is sad actually...because I do like to bake, but I like counter space more. : / Well, we had some pie dough leftover from Thanksgiving along with some Granny Smiths, so I made a lattice apple pie. I have always done deep dish apple pie, but wanted to try out this recipe that I saw awhile ago, and let me just say....that pie turned out fantastic! The trick is to pour the mixture over the entire pie instead of mixing it in with the apples... a new favorite. And then last night I made some peppermint cheesecake squares for the 3 o'clock snack that I am in charge of at work today...we have been doing a snack every day so far for December. I have only tasted a snippet..but so far so good.

Lastly, the most inspiring thing I experienced this weekend was watching "Buck" with Jesse. He had watched it a couple days ago and said it was one of the best movies he had ever seen. This is absolutely hands down my favorite movie! I cried like a baby through most of it, and was devastated when it ended. I want to meet this man so bad...we also want horses now too. I recommend just buying this movie though instead of renting it...it also would make a great Christmas present...I have a list building of who is getting this and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger...

I mentioned a couple weeks ago about my husband Jesse, his brother kyller and Jesse's best friend Adam, all working on a "secret" project for a window display here in downtown Salt Lake. Black Friday was the unveiling of it and was a huge success! After they unveiled their display to the public, I had people asking me if their cookie machine was really making the cookies. I will never tell! ha! Also, seeing all the kids just stare at it in awe and then receive free cookies from the machine brought some vintage Christmas nostalgia to me that reminded me of everyone's favorite classic Christmas movies like Miracle on 34th st. or The Christmas Story.... If you are in the Salt Lake City vicinity, I recommend gathering up some kids and going to see their "Mechanics of Christmas" window display at Deseret Book. It will be up till the beginning of January.

Here is the "making of" video..... it gets me choked up every time I watch it. :] I am so proud of my husband and how hard he worked on this. Didn't get a whole lot done last week due to being under the weather...

I did however get to build a gingerbread house with Jesse at our friends place over the weekend. That was a lot of fun, trying not to eat the candy while making it was hard. Avoiding sugar [especially ice cream] when I am sick feels like a workout sometimes. On a happier note...at least 2 of my succulents are doing well...the others, I am just praying they will hold out till we move to another place with more sunlight.

Thanks to Dominique [who left a comment] from Buenos Aires for introducing me to France Gall's "Ella Elle L'a!!! I have now listened to it 10 15 times straight, and still going! :-[) Thanks girl for sharing your favorite 80's song! The coolest thing about listening to this song was reading the youtube comments below the video...most in french, but there were two in english that explained the lyrics of the song: It's about Ella Fitzgerald's life. I say this because when I was 14 I dyed my long dirty blonde hair for the first time to a bright red/orange while my parents were in Hawaii. My mom was FURIOUS! I was now officially an "alternative" teenager! hahaha lol My parents had arrived back at the house from their trip at 4am in the morning. I remember this because I didn't fall asleep till they got home. I purposely put the hair color box on the kitchen table so my mom would have a reaction before actually seeing me.....oh did she EVER have a reaction. She literally wailed! Had I known my hair was that precious to her I totally would have buzzed it and sold it to her for $200! Anyways, come 2 hours later, 6 am in the morning...she barges into my bedroom and barks an order at me to come into the living room where she scolded me for an hour. Moral to this story? Don't sweat the small stuff...because it's all small stuff. I can't wait to see what color m kids will put their hair [if they want to] because I will be right there doing it with them...so we can be alternative together. Ahhh my poor mom. Any freak out stories about your parents to share, or are you a parent that does freak out on little things?

Holiday is coming....know what you're buying and/or making for everyone? I had mentioned that my friend Tilly and I are turning my apt. into a 1 day open house boutique. Here's some items to look forward too!

Birthday candle holders would make a fun little gift for your friend who likes to celebrate parties all the time! The would also be cute to get in a stocking if you ask me. :)) They are soooo easy, fun & inexpensive to make! To make about 10 takes 20 minutes. I forgot to mention in my tutorial that once you have made your little candle holder... BAKE THEM at 350 degrees for 15 min... AND THEN spray paint!

Last night I started painting a portrait of my friend Josh Brown. If you remember me mentioning Josh awhile back, it's because he was our wedding photographer. As a gift to him for Christmas I am painting and framing his portrait...[still a work in progress] - Portraits make some of the best gifts I think...where am I going with this? :-[) If you want to give a special gift this year to your loved one, why not commission moi to paint it? Just found out about this book "Roam" from Daily Candy this morning.

I am so intrigued.

"Nelson is a three-legged beagle/poodle who travels the country on a quest to find his way back to previous owner Katey, the great love of his life. A story accompanied with music is such a neat idea.

It reminds me of They Must be Giants Book "Bed Bed Bed" that I gave to my friends years back when they had their first baby...it comes with four stories to read and four new songs... This came out in 2003..so the songs are a little old now. :) BUT, click on the link above and you can get their book on Amazon for as little as a PENNY! Which translates to, you could easily afford to buy 10 of these as Christmas gifts! :-[)

*p.s. the illustrations by Marcel Dzama are a favorite... Most of his work is pretty morbid [to me] but

I do love how his imagination works and the slight simplistic distortion of his characters.

I was telling my co-worker yesterday about Jessica Hische [a REMARKABLE young typographer/illustrator] and that her latest blog post appropriately titled "The Dark Art of Pricing" , gives great advice on how to price your work for those designers out there [moi] who constantly find themselves getting themselves in a financial pricking pickle when it comes to freelance work etc. The comments her readers leave are just as priceless. Even if you're not some form of a designer but are perhaps someone who does hire them for any reason...it would be good for you to read so one can get a realistic feel as to where the designer is coming from. I remember Jesse telling me awhile back that it feels like our society treats graphic designers [for instance] as a dime a dozen, and that the majority of people take designing something for granted. Something to think about....agree/disagree?

I love this answer from Jessica in response to a question about what advice she can give to women starting out in her field. However, I feel her answer is applicable to everyone.

"Don’t make very rigid plans for your career. It’s good to have a plan, just don’t ignore all the happy accidents. Sometimes little opportunities happen along the way that make a big difference in your happiness and put you ultimately where you should be in your career."

I tend to crush on designers and/or musicians who evoke happy personalities all the time. It seems within the design world, that many a designer is focused more on looking "interesting" or cool as apposed to just really really happy being in their career and making a good living at it!

Don't you think they would seem easier to talk to or at least look like a fun pair of girls, had they been smiling? The handful of fashion shows I went to while living in New York really irked me for this reason. Everyone is always sooo serious and rarely smiling. I was always busting at the seems with giddiness to see new creations. I really love happy smiley people and actively seek them out as friends! A new friend I made at work who wears one probably 24/7 is Sarah...she is just darling! You can see why when you visit her blog. :) She really brings a light into the office.

Anyways...perhaps smiling is for the less cool?Or maybe it's not in style yet...maybe next fall smiling will be the new black? Either way, my smile is here to stay... and whether I look nerdy or not, i'm having fun! :-[)

Last night I broke out my annual winter reading material :

Little House, Little Women, & Jane Eyre are my very favorite "lady" books to read when old winter

I wanted to share some of the book's illustrations...aren't they enchanting?

After pulling my books out, I then attempted to organize my work space yet again. <- This is a weekly ritual of mine since I am a professional mess maker. : / When organizing the desks, I put aside this special little treasure the sweet Vivi sent me [among other goodies] a few months back. I know exactly what I will do with these friendlies... stay tuned!

And this little "remember" book is a favorite keepsake of mine. Full of random jot-downs, I was so happy to come across it again last night...I somehow managed to put it away in a box that hardly gets open...well you're back my friend..and just wait, tons of randoms will be entered in you shortly. :) * p.s. that recipe was taken off a program [I forget which one] from the Food Network...sooo yummy! But seasonal..best to wait till summer to try that one....

Speaking of food:

I meant to blog about this a couple weeks ago. My girlfriend Angela got me this book as a belated birthday present. I LOOOVE IT! Aside from all the recipes that look so scrumptious to try, the photography is just as interesting and beautiful. You can pick one up for yourself HERE, and just starting at $11.40. Hot Dang!

But, Angela got this for me because I had mentioned wanting to do some canning with her...which I have only done with my mother growing up and didn't seem to absorb any of the process. This book, for me, takes away any of the high maintenance assumptions one might have about canning, making jams and chutneys. This holiday I am going to start with something simple and attempt the preserved lemons below. If you try it for yourself please tell me how it turned out! :)

My moon costume: This was a lot of fun and a lot of glitter! There is glitter EVERYWHERE in our apt...and I am still finding it in my hair from Saturday and yesterday! I wore my costume to work yesterday...most everyone was dressed up which made the day even more fun. Then a lot of my co-worker's kids came in late afternoon for trick-or-treating....the teeny tiny kids were so confused by what I was supposed to be. It was hilarious. One little girl thought I was a unicorn... so cute she was! *p.s. Jesse says I was the night sky, since I wore a cloud and stars... I like that. :)

I love the moon and how it is always changing shape, its warm glow in a dark sky, and how it is like a lighthouse for the world. There is something magical about the moon, hopefully I can capture it in my costume this year. :) Speaking of moons, have you ever seen the movie Paper Moon with Ryan & Tatum O'neil? If not, it is a must see/must buy film! So well written that you forget the characters are not real.

It's official! I LOOOOOOOOVE my job!

Well, I knew I would love it based off of my interview, but I love love LOVE it. Yesterday, Scott, one of the other graphic designers/illustrators taught me how to use the plotter and do a test of one my designs I made. Voila, a gold bearded man in vinyl that you can stick on pretty much anything! Family and friends, you now know what you'll be getting for Christmas: Roxy's lil characters in vinyl. :-[) hehehehe lol

I look up to my husband in so many ways.

Earlier this evening I was in Bountiful helping Jesse, his brother Kyller, and their friend Adam with a huge window display project they have been working on for a company in downtown Salt Lake. I am not allowed to say what it is since they signed a disclosure. However, if you are in Salt Lake City for black Friday, you might wanna hang around the City Creek area...that's all I'm gonna say. :)

Anyways, on my way back home, I drove in silence. I was thinking about Jesse and all the wonderful things he has done for me since we met. One of my most precious memories to date is the day he took me on a looong long drive last month. I was having a really rough day and dealing with some depression due to still not finding a job. I couldn't stop crying and just felt so....lame. :( Why couldn't I find a job? I hadn't left our apt. in 4 days and really didn't care about a whole lot. Sooo, Jesse came in the bedroom, layed down next to me, held me in his arms and said "I'm taking you out to lunch, and then for a ride". I pulled on a sweater and put on a hat and away we drove. First, we went to Ruth's diner which is in Emigration Canyon. Afterwards we continued driving... & drove for over an hour till we came to a very secluded lake. It was so peaceful. There was a huge rock that we layed our blanket down next to.

I was starting to feel better.

While on that rock, he played his harmonica for me...

We lapped in the sun, and Jesse talked to me about needing to have faith. Needing to believe that the right job for me is out there, and that God [or whomever you dear reader believes in] has not forgotten about me...this can be a hard thing to believe sometimes. It is so important in a relationship to never have both partners be in the slums. Otherwise, who is going to bring the other out? My old boss Allison told me this one time. It is so true. The drive back down was a lot prettier than on the way up...I kept thinking about the story of Rip Van Winkel and how much the scenery reminded me of that book.

I eventually got out of my sadness...and tried working harder at trusting and believing that there is a job out there which is specifically tailored for me.

Wednesday, Jesse brought me home a money tree as a gift for landing a job I wanted so bad.

Thank you sweetie, I love you soo so much!

On Monday, I officially start working at Uppercase Living doing graphic design & illustration! Want to know the best part about this job? The Creative Director of this company is my very favorite old boss Allison Dayton !!! If you've followed my blog, you know who I am talking about and how much I adore her! What's even better is how much she adores her staff and all the employees there! This makes me even more excited to start work on Monday. A huuuuge difference compared to my last job. It is sooo funny how things work out. I interviewed with some pretty great companies for some really great jobs, and was so sad every time I didn't hear back...but now none of that matters. I am looking forward to being happy at work again, just like when working for Allison!

This weekend, Jesse and I got together with his family to do their annual tradition of pumpkin painting. I was channeling Nightmare Before Christmas... everyone's pumpkins turned out great!

Then last night, my mom took me, my lil sister Mari and our cousin Jessica [who was visiting SLC from Oregon for work] out to dinner. We ate the top of the Joseph Smith building in the Garden restaurant [?] Their food is nothing to rave about...but it is fun to be up there to see the view of the Salt Lake City Temple [pictured behind us] and then last night around 2 am in the morning I came down with a mini case of food poisoning that didn't go away till just a couple hours ago. :/ But if asked to do it all over again...I would. It was a lot of fun seeing Jessica and being around her bubbly personality! We hadn't seen her in about 20 years...so it was a fun little reunion! :)

So yesterday when my mom came over before going to meet up with Jessica and Mari, she pulled out a book that she found for me which she said reminded her a lot of me and my paintings and love for prints. Here is another book that I want to share with you all. I recently found this book at one of my favorite thrift stores. It is always so exciting when you come upon an amazing score. This, book and a few others are definitely my scores for the month! You can also find it over at Amazon just starting at $3.59!

What I love so much about this book Ilenka, is the color palette and the limited use of color. I am attracted to vintage children's book's for this reason.

Lastly, with the little amount of energy I had today...I made these two little hanging items from my painted paper. I love making things like this because it just proves that one does not need a lot of money to be creative. A lot of my friends [AND JESSE] often here me say that if I ever have to go to Jail [I actually had a freak out 2 winters ago thinking Sallie Mae was literally going to take me to jail] then all I need is a lot of paper, my muji pens, and hopefully some paint if they allow. I would really be content. :-p

* This craft seems pretty straight forward [to me] on how to make...but I will have an upcoming tutorial in a day or two on how to make your own version of these. :)

& a really cool tip I learned from my sister-in-law Megan's makeup night she had recently:

Baking soda is great to use for cleansing the face, not too abrasive...and truly leaves your skin feeling squeeky clean. I used it yesterday morning and was astounded at how it made my skin feel. Just mix it with your face wash...it's so affordable, you almost cannot afford to not try it. Cornmeal also works amazing for both face and body...best to use it in the shower though.

Oh my gosh I just laughed sooo hard and instantly thought "I have to share this!"

One my family friends Libbie [Riel] Fairchild from where I grew up [in Washington state] has such a funny blog! She is sooo hilarious in person along with the rest of her siblings and doesn't take herself too seriously, which I adore! I was just reading Libbie's blog and came across this picture of her with her youngest girl, who is known as "toots" <- soo cute! Libbie, husband, and 3 adorable girls currently live in Hawaii....

My very beautiful and super sweet sister in law Megan, is having her first "make-up night" tonight. Megan worked for Bobbi Brown cosmetics and freelances on the side now for them. Learning new or correct ways to apply one's make up is always fun, ESPECIALLY when it is shown by someone who clearly knows how to apply it, and looks good. Megan will probably kill me for posting these photos of her...but I just waned to show you al,l that she practices what she preaches. Her makeup is gorgeous huh! Well she will be having another makeup night again in a month or so, and when that happens...any locals who are interested in coming just let me know. :)

Tonight will be focused on simple beauty tricks, beauty do's & don'ts. Megan taught me how to do the classic "cat eye" liner with a brush. Since then, I wear it often. I currently use cream liner by H.I.P but am anxious to try the gel-liner by Bobbi Brown that she suggests.

What I also love about the cat eye look is that there are so many variations...like in the photos below.

I now have an intern! WHOOOAAAA....really?! Ya, I do!

You know my "Tilly" plates that I have in my shop right now?

Well, that little character is named after my darling Friend Tilly [a.k.a Jenntille] who is now officially my intern. She hasn't "officially" started yet, I need to compile my Holiday "Make Me" list tomorrow for she and I to get started on. I never thought I would have an intern...or at least right now, but it seems the opportunity has fallen right into my lap. Tilly actually approached me weeks ago about helping her with her end of the year interior design project for school. Well since that began last week, she started joking about she was my intern and I her baby mama [?] :-[) lol...Well, if I am going to be someone's baby mama right now, then it definitely needs to be to someone who is so funny, darling, and truly endearing! Last night while I was helping her create a "mock" website for this project she cutely said to me that she says mini little prayers for me before coming over that I wouldn't get frustrated with her [? <- THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN!] and that we would have fun together. No matter the work load with this lady, it is always the finest pleasure to be in her presence. So last night while tucking myself into bed I thought "why don't I ask Tilly to intern for me?" So I did, she accepted...and I am nothing but excited.

One of the things Tilly needed help with this past weekend was a "professional" portrait to go with her school project. So we set out for Liberty Park, with props in hand and I clicked away on my little camera. Mind you, I am NOT a photographer. I do however consider myself a documenter. The first two photos of Tilly below are without any photoshop work...the rest are, and the bottom was done by my husband. :)

Anyways, I can't wait to tell you all my tales of Tilly. She is a hoot, if you couldn't tell from the photos.

Back when I was 17, I chopped my long hair off right after entering beauty school. Well then soon after I decided that I could just cut my own hair. Most of those short haircuts I did myself were down right ugly! And then on top of that I dyed my bangs hot pink! lol Obviously not some of my better days in hair styles. :-[) Well not long after moving to NY I was able to find an amazing stylist. Her name was Izumi and she spoiled me rotten! Her haircuts always took two hours, they always washed the hair TWICE before cutting and I always got a scalp massage...then years later she and husband moved to Singapore...I decided to then just let the hair grow. Now I am in Utah and one would think that for all the beauty schools and hair salons there are here that it would be easy to find a great stylist, especially in Salt Lake...but for me, that has not been the case. I had received haircuts from Salon O, Landis Salon, and Studio Nine...all of which round brushed my crazy thick hair after I had SPECIFICALLY told them not to. Just doing that means you have automatically disqualified yourself from ever seeing me again. Seriously. Then, all three salons also booked someone an hour after me when I had asked them not too. Remeber, I have thick hair and the texture is a lot like horse hair,not making that up..... lastly, their receptionists were pretty rude...the Landis [Aveda Concept] Salon being the worst.

I had been wanting to go really short again for sometime but have been righteously freaked out about getting it cut here in Utah because of my last 3 experiences... Haircuts can be downright traumatic! Anyways..so then 4 weeks ago I was having a mini meltdown and I started chopping at the back of my hair....Jesse "casually" freaked out...and then tried to help me cut it. It was no good..I messed it up...and cried. Waa waa <- ya, just like that. :) Well, Jesse googled salons here in Salt Lake and found Malstrom to be the best choice based off of their reviews...I asked if he would come with me this time to for some added intimidation. Which he gladly did. But I didn't end up needing to play the "intimidation" card there. My stylist Amber was soooo gracious and warm to me as well as the rest of the staff that I instantly felt comfortable and my guard quickly went away. Literally my tense shoulders loosened right up. I showed her a couple pictures of what I wanted and we talked for about 10 mins as to how she would create that look for me. I fell in love! The best part of all...after she was done, and Jesse saw it...I could tell by his reaction that he too was in love... :) It made me so happy inside and I really felt good about myself. I don't say that to get compliments on past haircuts...but you know what I mean..if YOU don't feel good about your hair, makeup, weight..whatever it might be...it does not matter what other people say to you..YOU have to believe it. And that day I did. Sound cheesy? Well I don't know any other way to explain it. The husband/boyfriend expression does not lie. Jesse, is so sweet and the last 3 haircuts before this one I could tell he wasn't diggin it, even though his words were "you look cute...you really do" but this last time his words were different they were this: "OH MY GOSH I THIS IS MY MOST FAVORITE HAIRCUT!!!! And he hasn't stopped saying it. :) If you're in need of stylist....I highly recommend Amber! And below is the sideview.

Owners Berton & Lori Holt are by far one of THEE COOLEST COUPLES ever and are the owners of Strike a Pose Pix, photobooth company. Rent them for 4 hours at $500 and get unlimited photos. Your friends will go crazy over it...and it really is the best sort of entertainment one could have....aside from dancing of course! Jesse and I are so glad we hired Berton & Lori to be at our reception. The line was always at least 20 feet long...it was crazy! And when the photos print out, they come in duplicates...so one set for the friends and another for the couple [or whomever] to go in a book provided by Strike a Pose, where then your guests write a little message. Here are just some of the photos from our reception...over 8 months ago!!! Time flies when you're having fun! :-[)

This past weekend was the 181st General Conference for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Which is the church I belong to. General Conference happens twice a year, in the spring and fall and is always an enriching experience for me. I consistently leave feeling so inspired to be a better person, to serve more, to be a better wife, daughter, sister, aunt etc. I love to take notes during this joyful weekend and as always I love to share them with you. You do not have to be religious to appreciate the messages that are given at General Conference. They pertain to everyone. And I know that whether we are aware of it or not, I believe most everyone in this world tries to be better than their yesterday self! :)

Wednesdays are officially me and Jesse's "date night" as of right now... so last night, we stayed inside rather than going out to dinner and a movie to save money. Jesse had a great idea of "making something out of nothing" for dinner <- HA! Brilliant! :) So he sauteed up some red peppers and onions...mixed some pesto in, and then we took the quick bake pillsbury biscuits..smashed them out, put some cheese on top then the sauteed mix, more cheese, and topped with another biscuit, took the fork and sealed the edges.... They surprisingly turned out really good...I think making some with smoked gouda, mushrooms and asparagus would be sooo good!

Then I made a spice cake from the box...nothing special, but the homemade butter/cream cheese frosting was pretty good....and then for kicks, I added the gold sprinkles on top...It actually added the perfect little texture crunch....

Then tv shows later ...l.o.l..um yeah, we RARELY watch tv show's together as a "date"..actually last night was a first..but I really wanted to watch Suburgatory [which was pretty funny] and then came Modern Family and Happy Endings? We laughed a lot...but I do admit, I felt like an old fart afterwards... Our night ended with us skypeing with Jesse's bro and wife and while on the side I was also making more painted paper pics.. :)

My friend Valerie over at Lovelier Seas makes beautiful clothing using Liberty of London fabric. And now she has clothing for kids too, also made from Liberty. But the best part is is that she has the perfect little model now to showcase her pieces...her ADORABLE son Alden! I love these photos of him...when I first saw them I instantly thought : "modern day mini Gustav Klimt!" :-[) based off of his little tunic he is wearing....

but it get's better....mother and son sewing together as well! I cannot wait for Jesse to get home so I can show him this photo. The wooden sewing machine is GENIUS! And boys who can sew... make my heart pitter patter!! The night before me and Jesse's first date, he sewed a seat cushion to go on his motorcycle for me to ride on...I was soooooooo impressed and totally in love!

Today, Jesse and I are going to look for the second time at a little fixer-upper home in Bountiful [15 min north of Salt Lake]. I honestly couldn't imagine myself this time last year even thinking about owning a home. It seemed at least a couple years off, but with how cheap homes seem to be right now, and the interest rate being so low...the timing seems to be really good right now. The thought of buying a fixer-upper scares some people but when Jesse and I think about turning something ugly and boring into beautiful and quaint home, we get so excited. Plus, we work really well together and luckily trust one another's opinions with design ideas. I am looking forward to this new adventure that we may soon be embarking on...and to having our very own yard to do whatever we want too and build a TEEPEE in!!! :)

I came across this fantastic neglected schoolhouse turned home, that is featured on Country Living's site.
I love what these two gentlemen have done with it and how cozy it looks inside and out. Plus that yellow door! Ah... I can't wait to have a yellow front door! ;-[)

I love their kitchen so much, and how they exposed those beams. It adds such charm and warmth to any home. I was getting a little worried at first over this house we are looking at thinking "oh my, will it be too cramped?" It is only 1,500 sq feet [it has a little downstairs] but this school house is only 900 sq. feet w/ an upstairs!

the very first day. Perhaps I have had shoddy dry cleaners, but every time I have gotten a silk piece of mine back, it now has this chalky shade to it!? It drives me nuts! It's one thing if I buy it like that, but to loose the color....sooo frustrating. Regardless, I still collect as many silk pieces as possible...but rayon...oh rayon. ;)

Should you be doing something really awesome right now but for whatever reason you procrastinate the crass out of it? This past month or so I have been battling those mini "you're not good enough or nobody will like it demons" and the bottom line is.... if you don't do it [even if you think it could be the lamest thing in the world] then yes, you are right, no one will like it because they will never see what you wanted to start. +++ MEGAPHONE TO MOUTH : Stop being scared!!! That's really what this is all about is the fear of trying things...but even more importantly, the fear of failure. The fear of rejection. Who want's to be rejected? Certainly not you or I.... My good friend Emily and I were talking about this the other night...and she said it perfectly..."if you don't ever try, then you just rejected yourself!" I love that, and it is sooo true. Both Emily and I talked about leaving a legacy that night....since then however, I have been thinking about all the legacies I would like to leave and one of them would be to start a non-profit organization to help all those fearing people [me] achieve their dreams. This organization would have mentors from every successful walk of life, who genuinely want to see people become successful and see them through it from start to finish. For me, I let my thoughts [sometimes] get the best of me, and then everything becomes so overwhelming AND THEN I start to panic.

I don't like the feeling of anxiety...when I was in college I had two panic attacks, the first one "paralyzed" me for over 20 min...and the paramedics and firemen had to uncurl my fingers, hands, and legs...I actually thought I was having a seizure at the time. What I remember of that night was that my head was tilted back, my mouth open wide, my arms up and around my head, I couldn't feel or move my body and I felt like I was falling into a black hole. I started thinking about what if I could never use my hands again and then I started crying and panicking more...my best friend Sarah witnessed all this [it happened at her apt.] and I tried my hardest to tell her to call 911. It was the scariest experience I have ever had in my life. This panic attacked drained everything from me to the point where I couldn't walk on my own for two days. I felt like a baby dear who gets up for the time and crumbles back down. I also couldn't sleep soundly for about 4 days because my mind was racing so fast. The night after my panic attack happened I remember laying in my bed thinking over and over about the can opener in the kitchen, and I couldn't remember what it looked like and how it operated...I then cried over this and my sister [whom I lived with at the time] came into the bedroom asking if I was okay...I asked her to bring the can opener to me so I could stop these ultra high-speed thoughts of mine....but then it would move onto something else. : / I eventually got better and got back into my routine again.... Then the following year [my senior year at Parsons] it happened again, however...this time I could actually feel it coming on because I knew what signs to look for. Luckily it didn't involve an ambulance again. I have not had any major panic attacks since school which is a blessing...but I do get mini ones every couple months. The only way to control them is to control your thoughts... thinking rationally AND being kind to yourself as well as being realistic, is the medicine. I know I will be okay, I am not worried of another crazy episode....but what started this whole thing in the first place was fear. It was the fear of me not getting my homework done in time.....and then my thoughts spiraled out of control.

Imagine if we didn't have fear and if we were comfortable with failure and it wasn't even an issue in our lives. Yeah, if we fail, then we just keep doing it again and again until it works. This world, OUR COUNTRY would be a completely different place. It would probably be 100x cooler than the coolness it already is!!! :-[)

Anyways, back to a legacy I want leave behind. I want to make it to a place in my life that I feel confident enough to help those around me germinate their ideas, help them see through the complications and/or confusion of whether it's starting a business, volunteering, or learning how to do something new. I really want to see myself, and those around me succeed. Even if it means that my friends succeed before me first and I don't succeed till I am 70! But the look on someone's face of accomplishment is such a neat thing. It's a total addiction.

Wanna know what started this whole rant? I was just browsing through etsy and came across the shop Rorschach and saw this designer's mini zip wallet, made from a print he/she [?] designed and then I thought..."Roxy, what is keeping you from going all the way with putting your prints into textiles?" I have been designing prints for years now and the fact that I don't have them professionally on fabric [I have made hand printed/painted fabric] to buy is purely because of fear. :( I am embarrassed to admit that...but that is who I am, I wear my heart on my sleeve on this blog and as well as in person. I am an honest person even if it makes me look like a fool. Today, I look like a fool. :]

Fall is my favorite season for so many reasons. A couple of them being that the clothes get darker, and

the cheeks and noses get rosier. I love me a cold, rosey cheek. Decorating in the fall is also a favorite since we tend to be inside more and we [I am assuming you the reader thinks so too when I say "we"] love a cozy/warm environment. Yesterday I came across and new blog : LA VIE EN MODE + and today, Nimue [who is from Belgium] wrote an interesting post having to do with an article about makeup that she read in her latest ELLE UK mag.

In Nimue's words : "I read a very disturbing article in it about how you should regularly replace your make-up, because otherwise it gets filled with bacteria! I daresay it kinda freaked me out."

This is true. I don't know if the article talked about some of the causes of bacteria...but after reading Nimue's post I thought I would piggyback off her and to this topic. Bacteria can start in dark places...and one of the most common areas that women hold their makeup is in makeup bags, where it is dark. I remember learning this quite some time ago but it never really bothering me. I actually have my "get-ready-items" displayed in a way that saves time when putting on makeup, and I know exactly what I have. So rather than describe this, I took a pic. :)

Some helpful tips for maintaining makeup and your tools:

Date your mascara, blush, shadows...you really don't want to keep shadows more than 2 years. This really depends on the frequency of use too.

Clean out your eye lash curlers! There is so much goopy build-up on those things.

Wash brushes with warm soapy water every couple weeks. NEVER use hot water..this will cause the bristles to fall out. After washing, tap the water out gently and then press more water out with a towel, lay down to dry.

Buy mascara every 3 months! Again, depending on usage..if it dries up before that...replace it!

Yesterday evening, Jesse and I went and hung out with his brother and wife. Heather [my super funny sister-in-law] and I went to the craft store so she could see all the Halloween decorations. SHE LOOVES HALLOWEEN! After Michaels, we then bee-bopped our way over to the dollar store afterwards where they had thee cutest little crows. She bought me one! :-[) Thanks Heather! It goes perfect in our little dining room.

I also picked up the latest Teen Vogue. I LOVE that magazine and it's size....and Emma Stone. I didn't know that her natural hair color is blonde. But I love her in red...I think it makes her comedic humor even funnier for some reason. Anyways, in one of their spreads, this model is wearing THEE CUTEST HAT EVER!! This hat makes me want to become a milliner now... :[) I also love the hair & makeup on the model..she is darling!

I love Alexa Chung and her style. What she has been doing over at Madewell has been a success, which then has launched a second collection of her's coming from them soon. However, this new ad campaign video featuring Alexa Chung for Madewell kinda drives me nuts....no, it really drives me nuts. : / I am not a director, nor will I ever become one. But after seeing this video I thought to myself, I could make one 10x better than that!

I was hoping for something a little more creative and not so cliche-indie looking. I swear I have seen more than 10 fashion related videos this past year with at least one model reaching her arms out far and walking on rail of some sort and trying to balance, OR running through a field with the sun setting, gliding her fingers over hay or flowers, OR turning around in circles and looking over her shoulder. I love looking at beautiful clothes and beautiful people wearing beautiful clothes..but I am getting so tired of seeing these kinds of indie-esque fashion videos that either lack creativity and/or humor. Trying to convey how cool one is all the time actually becomes less cool to me. I get it, and I agree...I do think you Madewell [for example] are really cool, and I will continue to buy your clothes.... but what else? Am I alone here?

NOW, This new Lanvin Fall 2011 campaign is what I am talking about! I LOOOOVE the high fashion mixed with watching models dance awkward to a song that doesn't necessarily go with the overall aesthetic. The end is thee best part! I think I need to watch this again! BAH! :-[)

I guess the point I am trying to make here is this: I would rather be hanging out with the Lanvin models and dancing, than riding around in a volvo in Texas with Alexa Chung, going to the laundry mat in some remote town and eating gumballs.

Okay. So this will for sure be THEE LONGEST POST I have ever done in the history of my Roxy Marj Blog! I didn't write the long letter below that you are about to read.. but I do have to say that I wish I was as good of a writer as this lady Megan Benton who wrote the letter [Jender, does she have a blog/website?] On Tuesday, I happened to come across this blog: Being Miss Jendar which instantly caught my attention. Most of you know that I am part of the LDS [Mormon] religion which I mention on here from time to time, AND that I recently got married [for the 2nd time] in the LDS Temple. My ex-husband however, was not Mormon and we did not get married in the Temple. So I have kind of been on both sides....[this info makes sense after you read the letter] I love what Megan has to say to her friend Jender [I copied the letter from Jender's blog, with permission] because of the points she makes about marriage and being Mormon. What I got from her letter was that it doesn't matter if you get married in or out of the Mormon temple but rather the kind of person you marry. There are just as many happy non-religious couples as there are religious couples. IT IS SOOO TRUE! Just because one is religious does not automatically mean you are better than someone who is not, AND being religious does not promise a happier life! I personally am religious and go to the LDS church because I believe it to be the best life learning institution for ME, and that will help me be a better person. Going to church every Sunday for a couple hours isn't always easy, and some weeks isn't always something I look forward to doing...just like when I was in College...BUT I kept going to my classes in college every week because #1 I was paying for it, but more importantly #2 I was learning how to be better at something. It would not makes sense to go my Digital Design class once a month or even once a year...If I did that, I would be learning the same thing I learned the first day over and over again. Does that make sense? Annnyways, enough of that.... Megan is way more eloquent with her thoughts on this subject.

"To my dear friend Jendar and her other readers who are struggling with finding Mormon boys to date, and have realized they may be happy marrying a nonmber:

First, I'm going to refer you to a podcast I listen to called "The Round Table." Get it on itunes, and listen to the July episodes. It's a podcast that discusses LDS Womens issues, by women. And it's not put out by the Church, so people will talk straight and reveal what they really struggle with. They talk about improving our marriages and spiritual issues in marriage, and they hold an interview with a woman who married a nonmember. She is happy with her husband and her marriage. Also, I want you to check out the "Mormon Women Project" blog, because it gives spotlight profiles on women who are doing amazing things in the face of real challenges, or breaking molds in Mormonism. Also, I want you to google "Joanna Brooks Ask Mormon Girl" and "Feminist Mormon Housewives" and the "Exponent II." They are all rockstar resources for getting to know your other LDS sisters in a way you never realized you could.

Lastly, if everything I say in this blog doesn't resonate with you, then by all means keep dating members of the Church and get yourself some online dating memberships. You can meet people you wouldn't have otherwise met through your weekly Church activities. Lots of people in the LDS Church are shy about it. Don't be. Consider 1 in 5 relationships today start from meeting online. That's 20%, pretty significant.

Here are my thoughts about dating nonmembers. Keep in mind that I am undergoing a faith transition. In other words, my beliefs in religion are becoming less literal and historical and much more symbolic in nature. So I'm coming at this from a liberal Mormon perspective. I realize that not everyone is comfortable with that. I was not, even 2 years ago. That being said, I would love for our church to get less focused on why we are Mormon, and why that is so great and more focused on how to make our characters Christ-like. I want us to stop focusing on why we are the best church in the world, and instead talk about how we as Christians can become more loving people. How to use some of our creative energies for real social problems. I believe there's a lot of beautiful doctrine in our church, but if we just focus on things like why we are so great, then we are becoming like the Pharisees. There's a lot that other religions have to offer.

What does that have to do with marriage? Well, I feel like our discussions on marriage in church have a lot more with getting yourself to the temple so you can be righteous. I think it would be earlier to talk about how do I live with this other person from day to day and be happy? In the global church, not that many women are married to members of the Church.

In the church in America, we're all about getting to the temple, and getting there NOW. We hear about a couple that "just" got civilly married and we hear oh, what a tragedy. Um, hello? That's a WEDDING that just happened! Two people are in love and just publicly declared monogamy! That's a BIG DEAL!

When we focus on spiritual compatability from a purely ceremonial perspective then yes, we have problems. But what about what happens day in and day out of your marriage? It's not just a matter of, does this person keep the commandments? We as humans are so much more complex than that. Meaningful relationships and bonds take place between all kinds of people, not just the so-called "Righteous Mormons." Consider this: most marriages outside of the Church are mixed-faith. I don't know how faith problems factor into their relationships, but many people manage to stay together even though they come from different faith backgrounds. Sometimes it's a matter of one spouse coming to the other's church to make them happy. Others it's a matter of raising the kids in a certain tradition. The point is, lots of other people do it. And their families don't seem to be bemoaning their poor lost souls the way that many Mormon families do.

I think that the way that we talk about marriage preparation in the Church leaves a lot of room for spiritual coersion in marriage relationships. And I think that's wrong. Let me give you an example. I recently had dinner with some other women in my ward, and a woman who I hadn't known just opened up to us and said her husband didn't let her use birth control. She's been married maybe two years and is already expecting her second child. She loves her babies but she seemed stressed. She goes to school and it sounds like she's the primary caregiver of her babies, because her husband works and studies too. Plus he sounds pretty traditional. She approached the bishop about her problem with her husband about the birth control. But our bishop refused to talk to her husband. I think that is wrong, and shouldn't happen. This woman's husband has spiritual justification for his actions: being the breadwinner, the priesthood holder, and some really old-fashioned Church doctrine about birth-control to boot. Has this man been taught in priesthood about equal partnership in his marriage? Probably, but he is taking the spiritual doctrine that he likes. As does, I might add, everyone, whether you fall on the conservative or liberal side of interpretation. Even the general authorities have different approaches on topics, and represent a broad spectrum of opinion. Google the talk "Liahona Mormon" and you'll read about how two different prophets of our church had different opinions on evolution. So, in other words, in all marriages, whether it's between two hippy-dippies living in Berkley who do naked yoga on Sundays, or two conservative Ultra Orthodox Jews living in Queens, there are differences in how the partners experience and express their spirituality. You want a partner who respects your spiritual path and does not guilt you into doing things their own way. The late Sister Chieko Okazaki, who recently passed, was a Japanese-American living in Hawaii when she converted to the gospel at age 15. She married a nonmember, but was completely respectful of his spiritual path and did not force him to come with her. Later he joined the Church. She later served in the General Relief Society Presidency in the 90s. Even if her husband had not converted, Sis. Okazaki would have, I have no doubt, had a tremendous spiritual ministry and influence on people.

Here's another thing to consider: it's really hard to find priesthood holders to date because they are leaving the Church. It's because they're finding out things about Church history online that is really difficult to deal with. Or they're unhappy with the Church because it doesn't speak to them in some way or another. It's happening with women too, but at a slower pace. In any case, I'm just saying that many people are faced these days with a spouse who leaves the Church. Or maybe you have are faced with wanting to stay in the Church or not. There are other really faith-testing trials that people go through that break their marriages. Lots of LDS couples get divorced. A temple sealing is not a stamp of approval from God than exempts you from all trials and a fast-pass to the Celestial Kingdom. You will be faced with trials you never expected. But the love you have for your spouse can be a relief. When both spouses approach their trials in a compatible way and can keep respect for each other through it, that keeps them together. Check out "The 7 Principles That Make Marriage Work" by the Gottman Institute. I suggested it to my mother who is a Relief Society president currently, and she commented to me how many wives in her relief society are having marital trouble and publicly bash their husbands. Not exactly marital bliss.

Ultimately what I'm saying is, you should fall in love and enjoy your marriage. I enjoy being married. I love my husband. He is adorable and completely his own person. Mormonism has bonded us together in kind of an unexpected way: we look for the spiritual edification that speaks to us in ways that touch our hearts and try to shuff off the self-congratulatory or bullying dogma. It can be a challenge. I have to really pay attention that I'm putting my faith in the big things like Christ, the atonement, forgiveness, loving our neighbors. If we were to get caught up in what I call the surface things or even "certain personality things" of Mormonism like facial hair or caffeine or movie ratings, we would go crazy. We know what works for us and that's what matters.

People change in all kinds of ways: they change their hair, their weight, their careers, their hobbies, their health, even their faith. Hell, people can even change their genitals. Our beliefs are constantly evolving and being challenged. Do you experience your faith the way you did when you were a kid? Should we experience faith the same way we did when we were in Laurels? No, we are constantly developing. That makes me realize how human my Mormon belief system is. That makes me ask myself, am I a Mormon first or a human? I think I'm a human first. And so is your spouse, and so are the prophets.

I love this quote by Robert McCloskey. I also love all his books he has ever written and/or illustrated. As a child growing up, his books were always among my favorites and still are to this day. I hope some day to be a mini version of him, as well as Wanda Gag, Marjorie Flack, Doris Burn, Tove Jansson, and Elsa Beskow...just to name a few, especially if you don't know these illustrators/authors. I feel spoiled right now with getting to wake up every morning and working side by side next to my husband. I know this set up won't last long with Jess working from home, he is looking to find a job in an actual office setting. Poor guy gets stir crazy and desperately misses employee face to face contact. Until that happens, I am milking my time with him for all it's worth. One of the joys of working from home....you can take a break whenever you want. Last week Jesse asked if I wanted to go fly-fishing around Heber. HECK YEAH MAN! So we worked our booties off till 3 pm, packed a quick picnic dinner and cruised to the river. It was a lot of fun...but we did get ourselves attacked by mosquitos. 27 bites [for me] in less than 2 min.!!! : / We also drove around Midway, which is right next to Heber. OH MY GOSH! That little town is theee cutest ever and my new favorite dream place to hopefully move to someday. I don't have pictures to share [this time] because I was in awe at everything we drove by that I forgot to take any. But if you live in Utah or are visiting this area next weekend. Midway is having their Swiss days event. Sept. 1-4 I can't wait to go.

One of my side "to do" projects that I finished last week was to go through my earrings, get rid of all the ones I hardly wear and display them in a way that is simple, easy, and noticeable when getting ready in the morning. As opposed to keeping them in my little blue container pictured.

I went to the thrift store and got a vintage double frame for $1.00 ~ Spray - painted it black, took out the glass and then covered the cardboard inserts with some hand painted plaid paper that I rubber cemented on. *Fun Fact* When using rubber cement, cover both items with the glue and then let dry. Put the two items together and smooth with hand. This is the best way to rubber cement. ~ With a thumb tack, create holes...evenly spaced holes look a lot cleaner. I love this idea of using a folding frame because next time I travel I can easily fold it up, slip it into a cover [which still needs to be made] and you're good to go.

* I also found two clear glass rectangle dishes [75 cents each] and spray-painted the bottoms black to make my jewelry stand out more. I love how they look and the gold lines around the top that came on the dishes make a great accent.

Last night Jesse and I painted till 1 am. A favorite thing to do with him. Even though we were both doing our thing [our desks are back to back which means we get to play footsies a lot] it's always fun to be working on a project with someone else in the room who is also working on a project...even if it is quite. Brings such a nice feeling of peace. :) This was one of my little paintings I did. I haven't come up with a name for this little lady yet but I am already in love with her. :))

Then this afternoon I made a new yummy sandwich for lunch that I just have to share! Toast a bagel. spread with whipped cream cheese, sprinkle cumin, toss on some cilantro, cover with slices of cucumber, sprinkle the pepper and then drop on a few thin sliver slices of some smoked gouda!!! Oh my yum yum! :)

Little by little, I am building my portfolio of designs over at Minted. Like what you see? Well I am available for hire. Do you need buisness cards, a letterhead or wanna make your resume stand out? I can do this and so much more. However, I do have a unique aesthetic which constantly channels styles from the 1930's to the 40's.... this doesn't keep me from adapting your style but it is easier if we are kinda on the same wave length. i.e. if your into dungeons and dragons and that sort of thing..... yeah, I may not be your best choice. : /

I cannot believe the riots that have recently happened in England. Watching the videos has me in total bewilderment. Seeing so many youth & young adults causing havoc and destruction is sad...just as much as seeing onlookers stand around and do nothing. It's soooo chilling. I honestly cannot imagine myself just standing around and not doing anything at all! It's probably good I live in a pretty peaceful place, because I am the type of person who would try and stop things from happening with the risk in mind that someone could hit me over the head with a baseball bat.... : /

Gonna go shorter & DARKER with my hair here pretty soon. Ya know, just gittin roodeeeh [i.e. ready] for fall and all! :) I like Britta Persson's hair SO MUCH... but sadly, my hair wouldn't ever lay so nicely down like hers........my hair is like horse hair. It is still to this day best friends with old haggedy lady coursness...so when I do go short, I gots to get me some of that hair gel that all of those guido's in New Jersey keep raving about. And NO! I won't be spiking it up towards the sky.....get your mind outta the gutter ya weirdo!

Working on a fall/winter mood board today for my darling online friend Vivi. We are doing a handmade clothing trade and we thought the very best way to make sure each of us is happy with one another's product, was to make a mood board for the other. While looking for some online "tares" I came across this Fred Perry video via Selectism, a favorite men's blog of mine. I love how creative and simplistic this video is.

Did you have a great weekend? Me and Jess's was fun and very productive! Due to our computer crash of 2011 and Jesse having to catch up on work I was sentenced to 3 days in my 5'x5' office space! :-[) It was a lot of fun though and I finally got my little office chair re-upholstered.... re-purposing , re-upholstering, re-finishing furniture is such a satisfying thing to do. Especially if you are able to do it yourself. It usually takes some major patience and lots of mini breaks. Otherwise, the chances of you wanting to pull your hair is very high.

And then with the leftover linen I had, I added it to the little stuffed owl I made for a friend's baby shower gift. It has been awhile since I have made stuffed animals. I am excited to tell you that a new bundle of softies will be added to my etsy shop a long with items for the home at the end of the week.
